Susan L. Reynolds,

Susan Lynn Reynolds is a writer and an accredited
writing instructor in the Amherst Writers and Artists
method. She has been teaching creative writing for over
10 years. Her 1992 novel Strandia won the CLA’s
national YA Novel of the Year Award, and she won the
Timothy Findley Creative Writing Prize three years in a
row for her short stories and poetry. Her area of
specialty is the therapeutic use of journaling and
memoir, and her thesis on that topic received the
Canadian Psychological Association’s Award of Academic
Excellence in 2006. She has been leading writing
workshops for female inmates at Central East
Correctional Centre for five years and received the 2007
June Callwood Award for Outstanding Volunteerism for
that program. She is currently working on her Masters.

James has been organizing and hosting his reading
series, Hot-Sauced Words, in Toronto and elsewhere for
over three years. He is a frequent guest on Nik Beat’s
“Howl” radio show on CIUT 89.5 FM and enjoys
hosting Literary Festivals. His poetry has been
published in several anthologies and literary journals.
His first book of poetry,
The
Garden in the Machine was published
by Hidden Brook Press in March 2007. Through his
publishing company, Piquant Press, he has edited
and published six poetry chapbooks for emerging talents
and is working on two new projects. In addition to
teaching advanced creative writing at Durham College he
also leads a year-long workshop, A Novel Approach, with
Sue Reynolds, helping writers to complete a novel in one
year. He serves as VP of the Writers’ Circle of Durham
Region and works as a freelance writer, editor and

Rick Ficek, was a public librarian for 35
years in Hamilton, Fort Frances, Toronto and for the past 16
years in Oshawa. In Toronto Rick was a branch head of several
Toronto branches and prior to leaving, collection librarian
for the (Toronto) System. Presently, Mgr. Information and
Adult Services responsible for adult programmes, collections
and professional staff training.
Rick is an avid book collector, does some lecturing and
sometimes canoeist. Resident of Oshawa, a member of the Oshawa
Rotary, married with a daughter who just completed her first
year at Queens University in fine arts.

Ruth has had her fair share of contests to judge, serving as
both tier judge and final judge in a number of poetry
and fiction contests in
the past. |

Ruth E. Walker
An internationally published and award-winning writer and
poet. She has twice won the Dan Sullivan Memorial Poetry
contest and most recently achieved 3rd place in the
prestigious Banff Centre Bliss Carman Poetry Award, also
earning her a nomination for
a National Magazine Award.
Ruth has served since 2007 as an artist in residence to
the Durham District School Board with Durham Alternative
Secondary School. Published in journals and anthologies
such as Prairie Fire, Contemporary Verse 2, River King
Poetry Supplement (US),
Cadenza (UK), Rain Dog (UK), Ruth was a founding editor
for the literary journal LICHEN Arts & Letters Preview.
Ruth also serves on the board of directors of the The
Writers' Circle
of Durham Region and Driftwood Theatre Group, teaches
creative writing in workshops and community programs, is a
partner in Writescape Writing Retreats and maintains a
freelance editing and writing service. |

Penn Kemp,
Playwright & Poet |
London ON playwright and performance poet Penn Kemp appears in
arts festivals world-wide, as well as reading and giving
workshops in local venues for four decades. Penn received her
M.Ed. from OISE, Toronto. Since Coach House published her
first book (1972), Penn has been expanding text and aural
boundaries.
Her plays have been read
and produced in Canada, Hollywood, Brazil and India. Among
her publications are twenty-five books (poetry and drama), ten
CDs (Sound Opera) and six award-winning videopoems.
The League of Poets
proclaimed her a foremother of Canadian poetry. Western has
asked her to be writer-in-residence in London next year.

her children’s stories. Formerly a teacher, Mary-Jane can be

throughout the country. Her stories often include song and even
the occasional dance!
Mary-Jane is a published Author of five picture books in her
repertoire.
Hot off the press is her Junior Fiction Novel with a
curriculum-based novel study guide, certainly to interest
educators!
Mary-Jane will read from her picture book "Angel On A
Rooftop," inspired by a cancer story and will sing the song that
goes along with it.
She enjoys all the arts and loves to share a full repertoire at
her presentations.

Emily Sams, a young actor in the play,
will be reading a couple of poems just before The St. Mark's
Players with Michael Khashmanian begins.
Emily Sams has always had a love of writing and poetry and
has entered many writing contests at her school and over the
past summer has written a full length screen play and other
poems. Her dream is to be a tv and movie writer because of her
love for writing. Emily is currently working on a new play
called "Paths of Life" and hopes to be finished by the end of
the summer. She usually writes about her school, friends and
her emotions. Her friends have always been a big inspiration
for her work.

Michael Khashmanian rekindled his love of writing over the
past years completing a few short stories and poems and
several songs. With his current focus on theatre he has
written
five plays. He is currently acting in “The Backroom Backstab”
with the Backwoods Players which runs July 11,12, 18 & 19,
2009 at The Pickering Museum Village.
Michael has
co-written “The Piper – A Christmas Musical” with William
Treadgold, which you can see at St. Mark’s United Church in
Whitby, Dec. 3-6, 2009.
We are excited that the performance
will be scenes from that play performed by The St. Mark’s
players at the Stellar Literary Festival.. |

insects and fungi. Her experiences have proven that when she
